Sites' Naturalistic Emergencies

The site "Dune litoranee di Torre del Lago" (121,74 hectares, NATURA 2000 code "IT5170001") is constituted by a portion of sandy coast in a general advance, with sandy dunes strips and back-dune modest hollows, characterized by the typical sequence of plant formation of psammophyte (annual vegetation of drift lines with Cakile maritima, fixed dunes with Crucianella maritima, mobile dunes with Ammophila arenaria, juniper formations of coastal dune with Juniperus macrocarpa, ecc.) and back-dune wetlands. These last ones turn out to be involved in serial succession processes and in the large diffusion of exotic flora species.

The area is interested by a massive tourist influx in the summer months, but in effect is attended a lot during all the year.

The site "Selva Pisana" (9658,3 hectares, NATURA 2000 code "IT 5160002") is constituted by an internal system of fossil dunes and inter-dunes with succession of cluster-pine and stone-pine pinewoods, high scrub land, salty and freshwater wetlands, mixed oak-elm-ash forests with mesophylous and hygrophylous formation, in addition to coastal dune habitats analogous to those of "Dune litoranee di Torre del Lago", but in erosion in the southern part. Internal wetlands are characterized by the presence of patchworks of grasswort, helophyte formations, such as reed beds and large sedge communities, and ex-agricultural areas flooded in winter time.

Dune ecosystems and back-dune wetlands of both sites shelter habitats and flora and fauna species of high interest for conservation.

In fact they are some of the better instances of Tuscany dune environments scarcely influenced by man. Sites dune habitat also represents one of the better instances of Tyrrhenian coast and they are the only ones in good condition for the preservation of northern Tuscany.

Such considerations are valid in particular for Community interest habitats, as "Shifting dunes along the shoreline with Ammophila arenaria (white dune)", "Crucianellion maritimae fixed beach dunes", "Embryonic shifting dunes", "Annual vegetation of drift lines", priority habitat as "Coastal dunes with Juneperus spp." and back-dune habitats as "Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus and species of Caricion davallianae".

Dunes and back-dune habitats also shelter rare flora species as Solidago virgaurea ssp. litoralis (an endemism in sandy littoral areas of Versilia and Pisa), Eleocharis geniculata (very rare species in Italy), Stachys recta var. psammofila (an endemism in Tyrrhenian littoral area) and Periploca graeca (one of the little site in Italy).

In "Dune litoranee di Torre del Lago" site there are important nesting population of Community interest ornithic species (in particular Calandrella brachydactyla and Burhinus oedicnemus).

Wetlands included in the "Selva Pisana" site have a national and in some cases international importance for water birds wintering and they are a fundamental rest area for migratory birds along the Tyrrhenian coast "flyway".

In "Selva Pisana" site are also present reproductive populations of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Myotis emarginatus, Chiroptera inserted in Community Directive 92/43 enclosure II. For what concern the first over-written species, this one is the only colony known in Tuscany and it is the biggest in Italy. Moreover some individuals of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum winter in a building placed inside the site.
